Exhibition Alopecia

Alopecia is a skin condition which – due to a malfunction in the immune system – attacks the hair roots, resulting in hair loss. Why this happens is unknown. It is estimated that there are approximately 250,000 people with alopecia in the Netherlands. As a result of the condition, some of these people not only lose hair on their heads, but also their eyelashes, eyebrows and other body hair. This is the case with the girls who are portrayed in to the exhibition.

Photographer Simone Gablan : “The condition Alopecia has a major impact on women, especially young girls. I experienced this up close; the daughter of one of my best friends has it. This is how the idea for the exhibition was born. With these images I want to create more awareness about Alopecia and show that your identity doesn’t disappear when your hair falls out.”

The six portrayed women want to create more awareness and tell their story through the exhibition. Simone’s sister Salimah Gablan, in collaboration with Anne Lakeman, bundled all their stories in a special photo book. The book is for sale for €50,-

The exhibition ‘Alopecia’ can be seen until the end of September in the Passage of De Hallen Amsterdam.
