What does it feel like to feel connected — and what happens when that connection drops? In our fast-paced, individualistic society, loneliness is a subject that is difficult to talk about. With Connections: a postcard in exchange for your name Tomás Mauro (2000) creates an intimate space where art and encounter go hand in hand.

The exhibition brings together piano music, photography, short stories and animation into a multi-layered experience about human connection and loneliness. Visitors are invited to have a cup of coffee and share their own experiences of loneliness anonymously on a postcard. Together, these maps form a growing wall of personal stories.

The exhibition takes place in the run-up to and during the national Week Against Loneliness (September 26 — October 2) and ties in with the wider conversation about connection and social engagement.

Daily concerts
The gallery is open daily from 12:00 to 21:00, except Mondays. Mauro gives a live piano concert twice a day: from 13:00 — 14:00 and 19:30 — 20:30. Admission is free.

About the creator
Tomás Mauro van Emden recently studied Medicine at the VU and studied Planetary Health, where social inequality, mental health and nature protection come together. While traveling to Chile, Norway and Scotland, among others, he experienced both intense connection and loss of it. He incorporated these experiences into music, stories, photography and animation (in collaboration with Pepijn Jong).

“It was precisely the memories of meetings and places that gave me comfort in moments of loneliness,” says Mauro. “With this art, I want to invite others to share their own experiences and dreams — and thus make new connections together.”

This exhibition was made possible in part thanks to a contribution from the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts (AFK).
