A monument full of stories

Behind Kinkerstraat, next to Ten Katemarkt, you’ll find De Hallen: a historic building dating from 1905 that once served as a tram depot and is now one of Amsterdam’s busiest cultural hubs. It houses an arthouse cinema, a food hall, studios, a library, galleries, shops, a hotel and dozens of artists and initiatives, all doing their own thing but sharing the same space.

Food & Drink

From street food in the Foodhallen to cocktails at the Kanarie Club, a book of coffee in the Belcampo living room café or a stylish lunch at Hotel De Hallen: this is where you can taste Amsterdam at its best.

Arts & Culture

Watch films at the Filmhallen, admire contemporary art at the Beeldend Gesproken gallery, or visit the OBA library for a talk or a quiet spot. In De Passage, exhibitions on large banners alternate with open-to-all activities.

And in Hal West, the stage of De Hallen Studios, stories come together: from spoken word to talks and live performances.

De Passage

The covered Passage connects Tollensstraat with Ten Katemarkt and forms the beating heart of De Hallen. This spacious, light-filled area is open seven days a week and is bustling with life.

You’ll find markets, pop-up activities and cultural events here, and exhibitions are regularly displayed on large banners hanging from the high ceiling – ranging from neighbourhood portraits to fashion illustration and socially engaged art.

Craft & training

At Denim City, craftspeople, students and international brands are working towards a sustainable future for denim. Take part in workshops such as ‘Make your own jeans’.

At Recycle, people who are distanced from the labour market learn the trade of bicycle repair. The Jean School and the Kinki Kappers Academy are also based here – and yes, you can simply pop into the Kinki Academy for a fresh haircut.

Workshops & creativity

In De Hallen, you learn by doing. From soap making at Nature Bar to vision board workshops to sewing your own kimono at House of Denim. Dance and yoga classes also take place weekly, in the Belcampo Loft. This is where the head, heart and body move.

Shopping & Markets

Shop locally at boutiques such as The Maker Store, Denim Store, NoWa and The Gathershop. In De Passage, you’ll find markets that change almost every weekend, brimming with design, vintage finds and tasty treats.

Social impact

De Hallen is also a meeting place. Not just for culture, but for conversation. Think of swap meets, language exchanges, the Alzheimer’s Café, sustainability evenings and creative writing sessions.

Together with local residents and partners, we are working to create a place where everyone is welcome and has something to gain and something to contribute.

For families

De Hallen is also a great place for children. There is a branch of the Basker childcare organisation, a cosy play corner in Café Belcampo, and free children’s activities every Wednesday in De Passage, such as puppet shows and workshops run by Motherhood. The toy swap festival takes place twice a year. The OBA regularly organises story times, and throughout the year there are creative workshops and fun children’s activities. A cultural venue where you can make memories together.

Events & Media

De Hallen Studios is the ideal venue for conferences, dinners and productions. These versatile spaces are also used to film well-known television programmes such as Eva, Moltalk and Podium Klassiek.

Architecture

Built between 1901 and 1928 in Amsterdam School style, De Hallen breathe history. The old tram tracks are still there, just like the original number plates. The glass gable roofs let in plenty of daylight. What was once a closed workshop is now an open space for everyone.

De Hallen is a national monument.
