Expo: Veterans of our freedom | Veteranen van onze vrijheid
The Human Behind the Uniform
De Hallen Amsterdam – De Passage & Galerie
2 to 31 May 2025
In the month of freedom, De Passage and the Galerie at De Hallen Amsterdam are dedicated to sharing the stories of Dutch veterans. In collaboration with the Netherlands Veterans Institute, Stichting Veteranenkunst, and photographer Henk Warrink, we highlight the human side of those who served.
In De Passage: Portraits by Henk Warrink
Photographer and veteran Henk Warrink presents twenty portraits of Dutch veterans. No clichés or heroic tales—just honest, black-and-white photos where the person comes first. The series Welkom Thuis (“Welcome Home”) reveals who these individuals are beyond their uniforms. Henk photographed them in places where they feel at home, with care and attention to their personal stories.
De Passage is open daily until 01:00.
In the Gallery: The Art of Processing and Veterans’ Stories
In the Gallery, the VeteransArt Foundation presents impressive works of art by veterans, who depict their mission experiences through their art. Thanks to their art, their experiences become discussable, connect with the public and create much-needed recognition and appreciation.
There will also be audio fragments to listen to from conversations with veterans about their deployment from the NL Veterans Institute’s Stories of Veterans programme. And there will be meetings with veterans present to share their personal stories.
The Gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday, between 12.00 and 18.00.
