Twee noeste zeelieden (Robert Pattinson en Willem Dafoe) beheren de vuurtoren van een afgelegen eiland. Een troosteloos, winderig stuk rots, waarop niets anders te doen valt dan werken en drinken. De stugge collega’s compenseren hun gebrek aan sociale vaardigheden met geouwehoer in ouderwetse tongval à la Melville. Het onvermijdelijke aanbreken van de drankvoorraad resulteert in seksueel getinte spanningen, gewelddadige uitbarstingen en bovennatuurlijke waanbeelden.

Na de zeventiende-eeuwse gruwelen van zijn debuut The Witch, toont Robert Eggers dit keer een maritieme nachtmerrie in de late negentiende eeuw. In somber zwart-wit en bijna vierkant beeldformaat verbeeldt The Lighthouse de claustrofobie van twee kwetsbare mannen die tot elkaar zijn veroordeeld. If the immediate, textural pleasures of the film are such that you can almost miss the deftness of its construction, the skill with which Eggers balances out his ambivalent storytelling, while still ramping through ever-escalating climaxes, can’t be overstated.
