Soundsystems & Collectives: A Raw Insight into the Underground Rave Culture

From October 16 – November 2nd 2024, the pop-up exhibition Soundsystems & Collectives: A Raw Insight into the Underground Rave Culture will open its doors in the public Passage of De Hallen Amsterdam. This pop-up exhibition offers an unfiltered insight into contemporary Dutch rave culture, as seen through the eyes of young creative collectives such as Phantasm Audio Collective and PODD. With a combination of analog photography, video art, sound, and self-built sound systems, this pop-up exhibition is a true ode to the underground rave scene. The exhibition is part of the official Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) program.

A Glimpse into the Underground

Soundsystems & Collectives showcases the unpolished side of rave culture, a world far removed from the commercial parties and glossy images that often dominate the media. This small exhibition features never-before-seen images and visuals that are rarely published, offering visitors an intimate glimpse into the raw and authentic atmosphere of raves. With contributions from young, up-and-coming photographers, the exhibition serves as a platform for new talent and creative expression. The audience is drawn into the core of the rave experience, with powerful images and sounds capturing the energy of underground parties. From forest raves to events in abandoned buildings, Soundsystems & Collectives reveals the authentic collective experience of this scene.

The exhibition features analog photographs by Justin Stokkerman and Camiel Mulders, capturing the life and atmosphere of raves, and video art by Citrus and Nelfonta. These works provide an intimate and powerful portrayal of (mostly young) ravers, the music, and the spaces that form the backdrop of this alternative culture.

DIY Culture and Creative Freedom

In a time when electronic music has become mainstream, the exhibition emphasizes the do-it-yourself mentality that characterizes rave culture. Collectives such as Phantasm Audio Collective and PODD operate outside commercial circuits and organize their raves in unconventional locations, allowing them to retain full creative control. This freedom gives the events a raw, unpolished character that is increasingly attracting enthusiasts in search of a unique, authentic experience.
