In the Program Series Revisited, a World Literature Classic Takes Center Stage in Each Edition

Writer and journalist Dieuwertje Mertens discusses a classic book with authors whose work shares a connection with the featured book or theme of the evening. How have these writers read or re-read the classic? Are there aspects of the book they recognize in their own work?

The next edition, on January 29, 2025, will focus on the French author Colette (1873–1954) and the genre of the diary novel, using Colette’s classic Claudine in Paris as a starting point.
Dieuwertje will converse with authors Désanne van Brederode, Elte Rauch, and poet Robin Block about their interpretation of Claudine in Paris and the diary-like elements in their own work. Translator Gerda Baardman will provide an introduction to the book.

“Colette is the only great female writer of France.”
—Simone de Beauvoir

About Claudine in Paris
Claudine in Paris is part of Colette’s Claudine cycle. In this installment, Claudine moves to Paris, where she meets her future husband, Renaud, and her cousin Marcel. Her old school friend Luce also lives in Paris, but Claudine is appalled that she allows herself to be supported by a much older man. Ruthless, impulsive, and sensual, Colette—writing as Claudine—captures her witty observations and adventures among the intriguing characters surrounding her, masterfully evoking the glamour and excitement of Parisian life.
