Ode to the Kinkerbuurt – Photo Exhibition of Local Residents at De Hallen

February 8 – March 1, 2025

De Passage, De Hallen Amsterdam

From February 8 to March 1, the public Passage of De Hallen Amsterdam will serve as the stage for the photo exhibition Ode to the Kinkerbuurt by photographer Maarten Delobel. With this project, Delobel seeks to capture the essence of the Kinkerbuurt, a unique neighborhood where an extraordinary diversity of stories and generations coexist within just a few hundred square meters. A selection of portraits will be displayed as large banners suspended from the monumental roof of De Hallen’s 100-meter-long Passage, immersing visitors in the faces of the neighborhood.

A Neighborhood Full of Stories

For over 12 years, photographer Maarten Delobel has lived in the heart of the Kinkerbuurt, the vibrant core of Oud-West. A neighborhood where everything comes together: from rapid delivery drivers to young professionals, from the ‘oat milk elite’ to bar regulars, and from true-born Amsterdammers to newcomers. By portraying more than 100 local residents, Delobel captures the diversity and spirit of this lively community.

The exhibition at De Hallen is more than just a collection of portraits. Ode to the Kinkerbuurt serves as a time capsule in a rapidly changing city, where gentrification and rising housing prices continuously reshape neighborhoods.

10 Years of De Hallen: A Tribute to the Neighborhood

This exhibition marks the beginning of De Hallen’s anniversary year. Since its official opening in February 2015, the former tram depot has been transformed—after years of vacancy—into a vibrant cultural hub for the Kinkerbuurt. With over three million visitors annually, De Hallen has become a dynamic meeting place where historic structures and new functions intertwine to tell a unique story. De Hallen brings people together.
