Svetlana Tiourina has been travelling to Lamu, an island off the coast in Kenia, since 2015.
Now inhabited for over 700 years, the island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the best kept Swahili settlements in Africa. Lamu has become a centre of Swahili and Islamic Culture and is increasingly popular with tourists.
Svetlana Tiurina is mystified by the dark streets, veils and romanticism of this beautiful island. In the small streets of Lamu, under the colourful sky and the shadows of palm trees and baobabs, live the secretive women who have inspired this exhibition. The paintings trace the landscape back in the faces of the beautiful women in Lamu, the blue skies, purple ocean and pink bouganville.
