Savea Kagan and Ashton Benn
Choreography: Tree People
‘Tree People’ explores the cross contamination of personal memories and our unreliability as narrators of our own life stories. The distortion of yesterday tampers with real-time relationships of today, where shared experiences are preserved with a tinge of unwritten bias. Our ability to comprehend, perceive self vs other, and seek significance in our life situation is how we create a sense of coherence even during unreasonable circumstances. I will look back smiling endearingly at my suffering self and remember the joys of being held by the hands of time and having the courage to feel so deeply. And I will give grace to my Mothers and Fathers who created the landholdings, lakes, and lookout trails in these natural reserves that I explore; watering the already greener grass in my imagination and forgetting to water their own.
Ashley Affolter
Choreography:
Ashleys piece is about the process of grief. The way that it is a universal experience but still so lonely, a taboo. The way grief touches different emotions and states we can’t control, which makes it also very pure and overwhelming. How we should let it rage through us to process its pain.
Personal tragedies have caused her to feel different states, emotions, ahead full of thoughts and even her body could express trauma in its ways. Ashley is interested in zooming in on that overwhelming wave of grief, which is tragic but also beautiful. The way death can make life more resilient
