4 mei herdenking Oud-West
Every year, we commemorate the end of World War II. On May 4th, the Oud-West Remembrance Ceremony takes place at the memorial plaque for the fallen employees of the City Cleaning Department in the Passage of De Hallen. Everyone is welcome to attend the May 4th Oud-West Remembrance Ceremony.
This year, we also take a moment to reflect on the horrific violence occurring in the world today and the victims who have suffered as a result.
The program starts around 7:30 PM and includes musical accompaniment. There will be several speeches and a recital. At 8:00 PM, we will observe two minutes of silence. The Taptoe will be played by Bart Noorman.
Afterward, we will lay flowers and wreaths at the memorial plaque.
Memorial Plaque
The site where the Kleine Passage is now located was once home to the City Cleaning Department’s office. During the war, six employees of the City Cleaning Department were arrested, deported, and murdered in one of the extermination camps. The memorial plaque in the Passage of De Hallen bears the names of these six employees.
Among them were four street sweepers, a stoker at the Waste Incineration Plant, and a garbage truck driver. They were not heroes, but ordinary young men from Amsterdam who were caught up in a great war.
