Expo: ‘Oversized Beauties’

Where the European adventure of artist Alma Thomas from South Africa began at the end of 2018, her work now returns: in the beautiful Passage of De Hallen Amsterdam! The life of Alma Thomas, 58, white woman, raised in a peasant family in northwestern South Africa, has always been dominated by working with fabrics since her graduation from the Fashion Academy in Johannesburg.

Her work is characterized by the sometimes dreamy and alienating digital visuals that she can transfer in a special manual process under high temperature from paper prints to large, very impactful “lappies” as she affectionately calls her tapestries. With her work she wants to achieve that the viewer, as it were, steps out of daily reality and gets sucked into the artwork and time and time again becomes astonished..

As she puts it herself: “every piece is unique, every” lappie “has a soul and tells a story!”
